It is not uncommon for the edges of your marble tiles or slabs to be uneven. One piece can be raised higher than another due to installation issues or the settling of the floor. This uneven interface is called lippage.
Lippage catches more dirt and fluids "and feet" than a flat surface will. It also can lead to chips and costly cracks.
Lippage removal is usually the first corrective step in marble restoration. The stone should be flattened before honing or polishing it. To determine the extent of your lippage problem, place a dime next to the raised edge; if the marble extends upward past the dime, it needs leveling.
To eliminate the rough ledges and hard-to-see hazards, a marble professional must grind the high spots level with the low spots. Contractors use special diamond grinding disks that are different than those used for honing or polishing. The result is a seamless, level surface which, over time, stays safer, cleaner and requires less maintenance.
The sooner lippage is dealt with, the fewer the problems and costs you'll have later.
